Many runners don’t do sufficient strength and flexibility exercises to complement their running.There’s a rage to run in the country, but are we doing it right? You can’t possibly just lace up and run. There’s a whole deal of science and training that goes into this skill

India’s annual running calendar lists around 150 marathons and runs these days. Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Pune have a growing runner community that attempt the 5K, 10K , half marathon and full marathon with great gusto. Weekday short runs are supplemented with weekend long distance group runs and rigorous exercising. But with running bringing in much bragging rights, and looking easy, are beginners jumping headlong into something that requires more thought and planning than imagined? Are they injuring themselves unnecessarily in a hurry to win the race?

Many, like Ashwin Bala of Runners For Life, who’s been running over six years now and is part of the organising team for three of Bengaluru’s marathons, believe it’s a problem of “too much, too soon”. “Either they increase their mileage beyond the 10 per cent rule [of not increasing one’s weekly mileage by more than 10 per cent over the previous week], or increase their pace without building an adequate aerobic base,” points out Mr. Bala.

Slow and steady:

Marathoner Ashok Nath, a seven time consecutive Boston Marathon qualifier and three time winner at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon who coaches and mentors runners through his organisation Catalyst Sports, also believes runners just speed things up unnecessarily at the outset. He observes: “Initially there are some short term results but as the body can’t keep pace with the increasing levels of stress, aches pains injuries start to happen. Statistics reveal that annually 65 per cent of runners face some running related injury.” Our modern lifestyle has led to our bodies carrying stress, tension and, in all probability, excess weight, he says. “The human body is capable of great things but you must adhere to ‘gradual progression’ and not be dictated by what your neighbour, best friend, or the aunty down the street is capable of doing.” Another huge mistake beginners make is that they don’t get enough exercise. Sports physiotherapist and a marathoner and triathlete for the last five years, Dr. Gladson Johnson, who runs Attitude Prime, believes “exercise is medicine”. He says, “Many runners don’t do sufficient strength and flexibility exercises to complement their running. Hence injuries become a natural consequence of poor training.” He suggests that beginners should have a balanced proportion of running and strength and flexibility exercises first. “They must run a minimum of two days per week with three days of strength and flexibility exercises and two days of rest. Stick to one category for at least a year — do only 10km runs for a year and then take it forward.”

To coach or not?

The other huge debate is whether you need a coach to teach you how to run or you can figure things out with the help of a support group and peer sharing. Mr. Nath is very clear that while running may seem simple, it is actually a “skill sport”. “Successful distance running is all about energy management, and if you have the right running technique then you consume (or waste) less energy and are able to maintain your running form longer. The longer you are able to maintain form, the faster and further you are able to run,” he argues.

Entry of Gowdas to Amara Sullya region (Around 1530)

    First migration of Gowdas took place from "Igoor Seeme" of present Manjirabad, Sakleshpura in Hassana District through the cart road of "Koodu rasthe" of Bhisle Ghati via Kulkunda Subrahamanya under the able leadership and chieftains of "Koojugodu Kattemane" who settled in Ainekki. This group carried a "Sannadhu"(Licence) and Niroopane (Proclamation or a Decree) from Sringeri Matha and Ikkeri Royalty which instructed the erstwhile chieftains - Banals to hand over the control of Temples and Lands to Gowdas.

   Equipped with "Sannadhu" (Licence), Niroopane (Proclamation) from Guru Matha and Aramane (Ikkeri Kings) Gowdas terrorised Ballals, the vassal rulers of Ikkeri Nayakas, and forcibly took control of lands and Temples.

   Here, it is imperative to state that the first Chieftain deputed by lkkeri Nayakas was Thimma Nayaka, under whose leadership the Gowda clan landed in Dakshina Kannada, was a follower of Lingayath faith. He was blood related to lkkeri Nayakas' Royalty. He was native of "Kenchammana Hoskote". He subsequently settled in Harihara Pallathadka and married a Gowda lady of the same clan — from Kajjodi Gowda family who were settled in nearby Kollamogru. His family came to be known as "Koojugodu Kattemane family". Koojugodu family name is the derivative of lady's family from which Thimmanayaka Married. Minima 

    Nayaka had two sons from a Gowda lady of Kajjodi family from Kollamogru whom he had married. Subsequently they intermarried with Gowda families and became (convened to Gowdas. Koojugodu Kattemane family, to this day, are belonging to "Nayeru Bali (Gothra)". They worship Kenchamma of Hoskote as their family deity.

   At this time Harihara, Balagodu, Ainekki, Kollamogru etc. areas were ruled by a Ballala who was living in Rathnapura of Balgodu and he was in control of Harihareshwara Temple. He was of loose character and womaniser. He was not liked by the people at large. The priest of the Harihareshwara temple had an illicit affair with Ballala's Sister Ballalthi and having come to know of this, Ballala murdered the priest. Consequently, Ballalthi committed suicide and Ballala had no heirs as they followed matrilineal succession. 
   Balugodu, Rathnapuri Ballala was nurturing enmity against .4 Thimma Nayaka family who had snatched land belonging to 111 him. Once, two sons of Thimma Nayaka had gone over to their 41 maternal house at Kollamogru where, a grand Market was being held and precious materials like gold, precious stones, Diamonds, pearls were traded. - Even to this day, precious stones are illegally mined from the adjoining forest. Ballala of Balagodu laid a plan to exterminate two sons of Thimma Nayaka on their return from Kollamogru. However, the two young men got scent of Ballala's plan and therefore, came prepared with swords, Sticks made out of thorny "Karkotaka Tree" etc., weapons and confronted Ballala and his men. On seeing the Young men and their group well equipped and in good strength Ballal's men retreated and Ballala hid himself in the Garbha Gudi (Sanctum sanctorium) of Hari Hareshwara temple. Thus the sanctity of temple was lost. The Young men did not follow Ballala and returned to their Beedu (residence). Peace prevailed for some time but, the grouse and enuoty remained! Later, Koojugodu Kattemane Gurikaras (chieftains), invited Ballala ruler during the Temple festival for a game °I "Ambugai" and in the process hit Ballala with the coconut on the head killing Ballala instantaneously. (Ambugai was a game where in Temple Poojari will hold a coconut, smeared with smashed Plaintain and oil (In order to be slippery) high among the crowd. There will be a competition among the groups of devoties to snatch and smash the same on the Mahadwara (entrance) of the Temple. Whichever group succeed in this endeavour are the winners). That is how rule of Ballals in Subrahamanya seeme like Subrahamany, Harihara Pallathadka, Kollamogru, Ainekki and Balgodu came to an end and migrant Gowdas attained supremacy and became the Jameendhars directly under the rule of Ikkeri Nayakas. Leftover Baal Clan, Bunts and Jains moved over to Moodabidre and Karkala areas. Some of them intermixed with Gowdas and came to be belonging to "Gundanna Bali".

   Later, there was some misunderstanding between the two brothers — sons of Thimmanayaka - in handling the issue of confrontation with Ballala. The two brothers stood in the Sangama of Rivers adjoining Harihareshwara Temple and took oath against each other and declared that they will have no relationship with other in the future. They followed two cranes flying in different directions and settled in places where the cranes sat (It is a well established fact that wherever the cranes settles those places are ideal for cultivation). Thus two families viz Kattemane and Koojugodu came to existence, though belonging to same linage, lived independently and separately without connection with each other (no Soothaka) to this day. Both the families belong to Nayeru Bali (Gothra) who were originally Lingayaths linage and later became Gowdas through intermarriages. (Ref. Jana Marulo? Jaatre marulo?

Here I lie on my bed, recollecting on how, one peaceful Sunday I’ve nearly spent. Then! as though I’ve jinxed my own thought process, I hear, “ aaj blue hai pani pani” on full bass on the streets of my house. This followed by more such similar songs, ”Moore mooru peg-ige” , “yare neenu roja hoove”, “puchiku”, “color color”, along with DJ and trance music at mind numbing decibels.


I run out to see what all the jangle is about, to witness a crowd of (? tripping) youth, dancing for drum beats by a desi band who were following them. The band music had amazing dance notes I agree. As I wonder what the occasion is, I see a towering record deck on a tractor that was emanating those songs in super bass move past my house. It still doesn’t click to me what the occasion is, because in my head i’ m done with Vinayaka Chaturthi 2 days back. What made me realize it was Ganapathi visarjan was the Ganesha idol on another tractor behind the record deck with hardly any people on that vehicle.


I’m sure anybody viewing the procession from the opposite end will see any of the Ganesha idol behind all the accessories for visarjan.


Whatever happened to the old cultural traditional concept of ganapathi visarjan I wonder exasperated, after it took the whole procession 20 mins to cover the street. Where is the sanctity in the ritual? What on earth were they dancing for? Was there even a single song that was devotional? Why so much noise pollution?


I haven’t yet mulled on my own questions, and here comes another procession with the same state of affairs. Now, my only thought, why do so many people have to install Ganesha idols in every nook and corner of the neighborhood? Can’t we have one single Ganesha installed and do visarjan meaningfully?

ಗೊಟ್ಟಡದ ಗೋಳಿ ಮರಲಿ ಇರ್ಲಿ, ಕಟ್ಟಡದ ಕರೇಲಿ ಇರ್ಲಿ, ಜೇನ್‍ಗೂಡ್‍ಲಿರುವ ಹೆರಿಗ ಒಂದೇ ತರ ಇದ್ದವೆ! ಆರ್ ಮೂಲೆ ಇದ್ದ್ ಒಂದೇ ಅಳ್ತೆಲಿ ಇರುವ ಸುಮಾರ್ ಗುಂಡಿಗ ಹೆರಿಗಳ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದವೆ. ಈ ಹೆರಿಗಳ್ಲಿ ಜೇನ್ನೊಣಗ ಮರಿಗಳ್ನ ಸಾಕುವೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಜೇನ್ ತುಂಬಿಸಿ ಮಡುಗುವೆ. ನಾವು ಮನ್ಸಂಗ ಬೇರೆ ಜೀವಿಗಳ್‍ಗಿಂತ ಬುದ್ದಿವಂತರಾದರೂ ಯಾವ ಕೆಲ್ಸನೂ ಸ್ವಂತ ಮಾಡಿಕೆ ಬಾದುಲ್ಲೆ! ನೋಡಿ ತಿಳಿ! ಮಾಡಿ ಕಲಿ! ಅಷ್ಟೆ!!

ಜೇನ್ನೊಣಗಳ ಮನ್ಸ್ ಸುದ್ದ ಇದ್ದದೆ. ಹಂಗಾಗಿ ದೇವ್ರ್, ಅವ್ಗಳ ಮನ್ಸ್ ಒಳಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಒಂದೇ ತರ ಆಕಾರ, ಅಳ್ತೆ ಇರುವ ಹೆರಿಗಳ್ನ ಕಟ್ಸಿಸಿ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ(ಕಾಗ್ನಿಷನ್)ಮಾಡ್ದೆ! ಅದೇ ಮನ್ಸನ ಮನ್ಸ್ ಕಾಮ,ಕ್ರೋದ, ಲೋಭ, ಮೋಹ, ಮದ, ಮಾತ್ಸರ್ಯಂದ ತುಂಬಿ ಅಸುದ್ದ (ಬ್ಲೆಮಿಸೆಸ್) ಆಗಿರುದರ್‍ಂದ ದೇವ್ರ್, ಮನ್ಸನ ಮನ್ಸ್‍ದ್ ಒಳಗೆ ಬಾದುಲ್ಲೆ!!

ಸಾಲೆಲಿ ಮಾಸ್ಟ್‍ಗ, ಒಂದ್ ದಿನಲಿ ಎಷ್ಟೆಷ್ಟ್ ಹೊತ್ತ್‍ಗೆ ಯಾವ್‍ಯಾವ ಪಾಠ ಮಾಡೊಕೂಂತ ಮುಂದೇ ತೀರ್ಮಾನ ಮಾಡಿ ಪಾಠದಪಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡಿಕಂಡಿದ್ದವೆ. ಹಂಗೆ ಒಂದ್ಸಲ ಗಂಟೆ ಹೊಡಿಯಕನ ಒಂದನೇ ಹೊತ್ತ್‍ದ್ ಪಾಠ, ಎರಡ್ಸಲ ಗಂಟೆ ಹೊಡಿಯಕನ ಎರಡನೆ ಹೊತ್ತ್‍ದ್ ಪಾಠಗÀ ಮುಂದೇ ತೀರ್ಮಾನ ಮಾಡ್ದಂಗೆ ಖಂಡಿತಾ ನಡೀತಾ ಇದ್ದದೆ. 

ನಾವು ಮಾಡುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದ್ ಕೆಲ್ಸಗ ಸಾಲೆಲಿ ಗಂಟೆ ಹೊಡ್ದಂಗೆ! ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದ್ ಕೆಲ್ಸಕ್ಕೂ ತಕ್ಕ ಪ್ರತಿಪಲನ ದೇವ್ರ್ ಸಾಲೆದ್ ಪಾಠದಪಟ್ಟಿ ತರ ಮುಂದೇ ಮಾಡಿ ಮಡ್ಗಿದ್ದದೆ. ಈ ಸಂಗತಿನ ಭಗವತ್ಗೀತೆಲಿ “ಕರ್ಮಣ್ಯೇ ವಾದಿಕಾರಸ್ತೇ ಮಾಫಲೇಸು ಕದಾಚನ”ತ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ ಹೇಳಿಟ್ಟು. ನಮ್ಗೆ ಕೆಲ್ಸ ಮಾಡಿಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅದಿಕಾರ, ನಾವು ಗ್ಯಾನ ಮಾಡಿರು, ಮಾಡದೇ ಇದ್ದರೂ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲ್ಸಕ್ಕೆ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಪ್ರತಿಪಲ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಯೇ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದೆ!!

ಕಂಪನಿಲಿ ಕೆಲ್ಸ ಮಾಡೊವ್ಕೆ ಒಂದ್ ಕೆಮಿಮಾತ್. ನಿಮಿಗೆ ತಿಂಗಳ ಸಂಬಳ ಏನೋ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಸಮಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬಾದು, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲ್ಸಕ್ಕೆ ಒಪ್ಪುವ ಇಂಕ್ರಿಮೆಂಟ್ ಬೇಕಾರೆ, ಮಾಮೂಲ್ ಕೆಲ್ಸದ ಗಂಟೆ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಇಂಕ್ರಿಮೆಂಟ್ ಗಂಟೆನ ಖಂಡಿತ ಹೊಡಿಯಕು! 

ಮೂಗುಗೆ ದಾರ ಹಾಕಿಸಿಕಂಡÀ ಗಾಡಿ ಎತ್ತ್‍ಗಳ ತರ ಹೆಗ್ಲ್ ಕೊಡ್ದರ್ನ ಬುಟ್ಟು, ಜೇನ್ನೊಣಗಳ ತರ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ ತೋರ್ಸಿ! ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಲಾಭ ತರ್ಸಿ ಕೊಡುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಇಂಕ್ರಿಮೆಂಟ್ ಗಂಟೆನ ಮದ್ಯ ಮದ್ಯ ಹೊಡ್ಕಂಡ್ ನೀವೂ ಮೇಲೆ ಬನ್ನಿ! ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕೈಲಿ ತೀರಿರೆ ಕಂಪನಿ ಕೆಲ್ಸನ ಬುಟ್ಟ್ ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ ಸ್ವಂತ ಉದ್ಯೋಗನ ಸುರು ಮಾಡಿಯೇ ಬುಡಿಗಡ!!

ನಿನ್ನ ಜೊತೆ ನಡೆಯಲು ಕಷ್ಟವಾಯಿತು
